$28.5 million St. Luke’s Lakeside Hospital designed for high-quality specialty care

DALLAS, TEXAS—Jan. 6, 2010—St. Luke’s Episcopal Health System in Houston, Texas is celebrating the opening of Lakeside Hospital, a new addition on the campus of St. Luke’s The Woodlands Hospital. The $28.5 million facility, designed by RTKL, focuses on three areas of excellence in medicine--cardiology, sports medicine, orthopedic/spine care. The Woodlands is a master planned community located 25 miles north of Houston.

The new 90,000-square-foot, stand-alone hospital includes 30 inpatient beds, six operating rooms, and three cardiac catheterization labs, as well as the latest diagnostic imaging technologies. With shell space and the flexibility to add on, the facility has been planned for growth, which positions Lakeside to become the major cardiac, sports medicine, and orthopedic/spine healthcare provider in the region.

“Lakeside is an all-digital specialty facility designed to support the latest medical technology and advanced clinical protocols,” said John Seely, AIA, the lead project designer for RTKL. “St. Luke’s wanted the hospital to be easily identifiable as a new state-of-the-art facility, yet blend with the existing medical center.  In response, we designed a contemporary building with elements that have their own unique form and material. These help brand and differentiate Lakeside.  And yet, the building blends harmoniously with other campus buildings because we used a material palette with colors and textures seen throughout the campus.”

RTKL ensured that Lakeside Hospital would live up to its name by creating spaces with views of a bucolic three-acre lake located on the St. Luke’s campus. Adjacent to the main lobby is a glass chapel overlooking the lake, as well as the hospital’s restaurant, aptly named the Lakeside Café. Outdoors, on the first level, a covered gathering space is just steps from the water, while inside the facility, large windows in patient rooms and public spaces ensure that this natural healing element is easily visible. The hospital is also positioned so that patients, family members, employees and visitors are able to enjoy the view of the lake when they enter from the major boulevard.

St. Luke’s Lakeside Hospital also takes advantage of its proximity to Interstate Highway 45, the main corridor connecting Houston to Dallas/Fort Worth.  The building’s elevation allows its signage to be easily visible from this major traffic artery.

In addition to architectural and master planning services, RTKL handled interior design and equipment planning for the project.  Consultants included Bellows Construction, general contractor; Wylie Consulting Engineers, MEP engineer; Haynes Whaley Associates, structural engineer; Walter P Moore, civil engineer; and TBG Partners, landscape architect.
