Performance-Driven DesignSM

Performance-Driven DesignSM (PDD) is a strategy to improve the VALUE of the built environment.

By drawing on ample evidence about the social, economic, and environmental impact of design, PDD seeks to apply the greatest available intelligence to create uplifting places with measurable benefits to people, place, and planet. Every decision at every stage of a project can enhance both performance and design quality.

RTKL’s PDD is a branded initiative that promises not just to improve our work but also to create a new standard for design excellence. Starting with each project’s goals and continuing through its strategies and results, PDD can be adapted to the unique circumstances of any project and support the needs of all our teams and clients. In this way, we can encourage experimentation and freedom around a shared vision and set of values that unite all of our work.

History

1946 The birth of a practice

Archibald Rogers and Francis Taliaferro open a practice in the Annapolis, Maryland basement of Rogers' grandmother's house. Their first important commission is the Trinity Methodist Church in Annapolis; it is completed for a construction cost of 75 cents per cubic foot.

1949 The arrival of a third partner

Charles Lamb joins the firm. His design of the Teepee Lodge for the Anne Arundel County Girl Scouts earns the practice its first Award of Merit from the American Institute of Architects.

1951 Onward and upward

The firm moves to offices on the 2nd floor fo the Old Opera House on Prince George's Street.

1954 A new definition for retail

Rogers and Taliaferro, Architects, designs Harundale Shopping Center for developer James Rouse. It is the first enclosed shopping mall on the East Coast and a forerunner of the firm's later retail designs.

1958 A growing reputation

Internationally renowned architect Pietro Belluschi selects Rogers, Taliaferro and Lamb as his associate architect for the design of the Church of the Redeemer. The project receives an AIA Award of Merit and, in 1986, a special 25-Year Award from the AIA's Baltimore Chapter.

1959 Gaining urban credentials

Rogers is named Acting Director of the Greater Baltimore Committee, which oversees the redevelopment of Charles Center, the city's urban core. This 33-acre project sparks Baltimore's renaissance and becomes known worldwide as a prototypical redevelopment project.

1961 New horizons

George Kostritsky, who had been the project planner for the Charles Center Redevelopment, joins the firm as partner. Rogers, Taliaferro, Kostritsky and Lamb is commissioned to design the public spaces for Charles Center. Largely because of the success of their involvement, the firm is commissioned to develop downtown plans for Cincinnati, Hartford, and Charlotte, North Carolina, among other US cities.

1968 Officially RTKL

The unwieldy "Rogers, Taliaferro, Kostritsky and Lamb" is condensed to RTKL, reportedly by a tongue-tied receptionist. Officially incorporated on August 27, 1968 RTKL names Harold Adams as managing partner and president—an indication of the firm's dedication to management. Archibald Rogers is elected to the AIA College of Fellows.

1969 A new studio system

1982 Renewed Commitment

The firm moves to the Inner Harbor Center, an 11-story headquarters building designed by RTKL. The move signals the firm's continued commitment to the development of the Inner Harbor and the economic health of Baltimore's downtown. That same year, the firm enters the world of computer-aided design and drafting with the purchase of an Intergraph VAX.

1983 Stacking up accolades

Harold L. Adams is elected to the AIA College of Fellows.

RTKL's new Los Angeles office creates a permanent presence on the West Coast with convenient access to regional and Pacific Rim clients and projects.
